An exercise on defamiliarization

{This is an exercise on defamiliarization in our Creative Writing (English 106) class. These poems have been under tough critique during our workshop this morning, but please feel free to comment or share your critique of my poems as well. They are highly welcome and will be much appreciated.}

Going to School

Stepping out of the door, your eyes dilate
The world greets you, after its wait.
Opening your umbrella, you watch your steps
The distance is long, your time is short.

The honking vehicles distract you
And you curse their smoke-belching
Neanderthals on the sidewalk annoy you
You wish to skip those cramped streets.

Passing through the gate,
You realize you are running late.
But looking at the mountain and its many trees
Your face wears off its frown and replaces it with a grin.

Dormitoryo

Rinig ko ang pumapalong ulan sa lupa
Ang tunog ng telebisyon mula sa ibaba
Ang umaandar na bintilador
Ang mga yapak sa sahig na kahoy
          Ikaw na ba ‘yan?

Naitapon na ang mga bote ng tubig
Napagpag na ang alikabok sa bintana
Wala na ang mga agiw sa dingding
Napalitan na ang bumbilya
          Ngunit wala ka pa.

Bukas pagsikat ng araw
Paglabas ng mga ulap
Sa unang taghoy ng hangin,
Ako’y magiging malaya.

Ang batang si Juan

Sa kanang kamay ay mapurol na lapis
Sa kaliwa’y nag-aalborotong tiyan
Nakalutang sa hangin ang mga titik
Sumasayaw ang apoy sa napupudpod na kandila.
